Application

Flat panel display

Large, highly uniform UV LED area sources for encapsulating display modules and parallel exposure, without edge effects.

In flat panel display (FPD) production, UV-curable materials encapsulate display modules over large areas. Curing has to be uniform from the centre to the edges: if the edges of the irradiated area receive less light, the material cures unevenly there, and the defect shows in the finished module.

Where it is used

  • Display module encapsulation: large, uniform area light sources cure the encapsulation material of the module in a single exposure.
  • Parallel exposure: collimated area light irradiates a large surface with parallel light, for exposure steps.
  • Large-area uniform curing: combining wavelengths, light guides and optics keeps the power density high and stable at different working distances.

What Awellcure area sources offer

  • Uniformity above 92 %: series-production area sources reach a uniformity of more than 92 %, so the material cross-links evenly across the surface and local under-curing is avoided.
  • Every size: standard sizes from 30 × 50 mm to 500 × 500 mm, and custom sizes up to 2,300 × 1,500 mm.
  • Custom shapes for automation: ring, cylindrical and embedded designs fit compact automated lines and make the source easy to build into equipment.
  • Low heat: UV LED light contains no infrared, which protects heat-sensitive materials.

Checking uniformity

A common way to rate uniformity is to measure the power at nine points across the irradiated area and compare them. A UV radiometer makes this a routine check, so you can confirm the area source still cures evenly. How to choose a UV lamp explains how divergence, uniformity and working distance interact.
